What is the Cervix
It is the lower, narrow part of the uterus and forms a canal that open into Vagina.
What are the symptoms of Cervical Cancer
Some time it causes no symptoms or may have the following symptoms:
Abnormal vaginal bleeding between periods or after intercourse or pelvic examination Menstrual periods may last longer or be heavier than usual.
Bleeding after menopause.
Can Cervical cancer be detected earlier
Yes, by having regular annual PAP smear and pelvic examination.
Who is at risk of getting cancer of the cervix ?
Women who began having sexual activity before the age of 18.
Women who had multiple husbands.
If the woman's partner having sexual intercourse at an early age, had multiple partners, or was previously married to women who cad cervical cancer.
History of sexually transmitted Viruses (HPV, gential herpes virus)
Women whose immune system is weakned.
What treatment is available?
Depending on stage of the disease, one or more of these treatment modalities may be used
Surgery
Radiation therapy with or without Chemothearpy
The disease is highly curable if treated at an early stage.
